This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
